Make vanilla extract at home with just 2 ingredients!
Homemade vanilla extract is very easy to make and smells wonderful! This vanilla extract is sugar-free and made with just two ingredients: vanilla beans and rum. And there are so many uses of homemade vanilla extract: You can use vanilla extract to flavor cake, cookies, smoothies, ice cream and pudding.

Homemade Vanilla Extract Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 vanilla beans
- 1 cup rum
Directions:
Split the vanilla bean in half and scrape out the seeds. The seeds aren’t necessary for vanilla extract – use them for vanilla ice cream or vanilla pudding.

Now cut the vanilla bean into small pieces and put them into a jar.
Pour rum over the vanilla bean pieces. Cover the jar with a lid and store the vanilla extract in a cool and dark place for at least one month, shaking it occasionally.
You can reuse the ‘spent’ vanilla bean pieces for your next homemade vanilla extract.

I have made vanilla extract for years and we love using it…. I have never used rum though… have always used vodka, but have heard good things about making it with rum. Thank you
Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 I don’t like the taste of vodka so I used rum! 😉
That’s good to know Lina, I’d love to try make our own vanilla extract, but I’m not 100% sure where to get the pods. I haven’t seen any at the organic market we go to. I’ll have to shop around a bit more
In our organic market, vanilla beans are near the baking supplies. And you can also buy organic vanilla beans online.
Not sure if you have Costco there Michelle… but they sell it here

I have made homemade vanilla for years and have tried every imaginable alcohol, rum, vodka, etc. I have found that my favorite is a really good cognac. I also place the whole vanilla bean or two or three sliced open in the bottle, it looks really pretty especially for gift giving. It does in fact give a more vanilla flavor and you can also take them out to use the seeds in other things but with so much more flavor. Recently I had a luncheon and gave each guest a parting gift of my homemade vanilla. They loved it.

I’ve never seen this made w/ rum. Determined to make some this year and give myself enough time for holiday gift giving. Featuring when my party opens. Thank you for sharing!
I don’t like the taste of vodka so I used rum instead! 😉 Thanks for featuring! 🙂
I bet this tastes so good compared to the vanilla extract bought in the store. I will be looking for the vanilla bean to try this.

I have vanilla beans in my cupboard right now. I had no idea it was this easy. Thank you for the recipe. Pinning.
How long is it good for? Do you store it in a cupboard?
