Who doesn’t like a toy for Christmas? Turn old clothes and fabric scraps into these 2 cute DIY Christmas dog toys: A green and red Christmas wreath dog toy and and a red and white candy cane dog toy. You’re pup will love them!
These 2 DIY Christmas dog toys are great for playing fetch and tug-of-war with your dog. And the Christmas toys cost you nothing if you use your old torn clothes to make them. For the Christmas wreath dog toy I used an old sweater that I wore as a child. And for the candy cane dog toy I used old red and white fabric strips. Sweater pants and leggings work well too because you can cut them into long strips.
On my puppy’s instagram account @khaleesi_theblackgsd I share pictures of her playing with the DIY Christmas dog toys.
2 DIY Christmas Dog Toys: Christmas Wreath & Candy Cane Dog Toy
You’ll need:
- old clothes or fabric scraps in red, green and white
- strong scissors
- needle-nose pliers
- elastic or hair tie
Cut the old clothes into long 4 – 6″ (10 – 15cm) wide strips.
DIY Candy Cane Dog Toy
Materials: You need 2 long white strips, 2 long red strips, and 1 green strip for the bow.
The knots: Temporarily secure 2 red and 2 white strips with an elastic or hair tie. Red and white are opposite each other.
Tie a series of spiral crown knots (also called round crown knot) until the candy cane dog toy is approximately 15″ (40cm) long: Here‘s a video of how to tie a spiral crown knot.
Hiding the tails: To hide the tails, push the needle-nose pliers through the candy cane dog toy, grab the tail and pull it through the toy. Then trim the ends.
Candy cane shape & bow: Bend the dog toy into a candy cane shape and tie a bow around the candy cane with the green strip. The candy cane shape is only temporary – when you play with your pup, the candy cane toy is a straight tug toy again.
DIY Christmas Wreath Dog Toy
Materials: You need 4 long green strips and 1 long red strip.
The knots: Temporarily tie together 4 green strips with an elastic or hair tie. Then tie a series of spiral crown knots until the wreath dog toy is approximately 15″ (40cm) long.
Wreath shape: Tie the opposite tails together with square knots. You’ll have 4 square knots which secure the wreath shape of the toy.
Hiding the tails: To hide the tails, push the needle-nose pliers through the Christmas wreath dog toy, grab one of the tails and pull it through. Then trim the ends.
The ribbon: Wrap the red strip around the wreath dog toy and tie the ends together with a square knot.

Great idea! I used to make lanyards using the same method. Never thought to do the same thing to make dog toys.
Thank you, Dawn! 😀
I am so happy to see you included your four legged family member as well.
Thanks for stopping by, Angie! 😀
So perfect! Our GSD, Zack, will love these and now I won’t feel guilty about not mending my ratty jeans again. Give Khaleesi a hug from Zack–she’s adorable and her name suits her perfectly!
Thank you so much, Karen! 😀
