Make cute embroidered felt gingerbread ornaments!
These felt Christmas ornaments are inspired by gingerbread cookies. Aren’t they cute? However, these DIY felt gingerbread ornaments take longer to make than other felt Christmas ornaments I made in the past. But they are so worth the time, don’t you think? 🙂

You’ll Need:
- felt
- embroidery floss (or yarn) in red, green & white
- needle
- scissors
Make A Paper Pattern
You can either draw a pattern freehand on paper or use cookie cutters as pattern. Cut out the paper pattern.
Cut Out Felt Ornaments
Then, using the paper pattern, cut out two felt shapes for each felt ornament. The second felt layer is necessary to hide the wrong side of the embroidery and to stiffen the felt Christmas ornaments.
Embroider The Felt Ornaments
Now embroider the DIY felt gingerbread ornaments with red, green and white embroidery floss. You can either embroider the ornaments freehand or draw a design on the felt with a dressmaker’s marking pencil, chalk or white soap.
For these felt tree ornaments I used a combination of embroidery stitches: running stitches, double running stitches, back stitches, couching stitches and Colonial knots.
DIY Felt Star Ornament
Red Embroidery
Cut a piece of red embroidery thread. Secure the thread with a knot on the wrong side. Then embroider the points of the star with double running stitches and colonial knots (or French knots) as in the picture above.
White Embroidery
Then thread the needle with a piece of white embroidery thread. And stitch the star shape with back stitches and the scrolls with couching stitches.
Sew Felt Layers Together
Now sew both felt layers together with running stitches. And add a thread as hanger.
DIY Felt Tree Ornament
Red Embroidery
Cut a piece of red embroidery thread. Secure the thread with a knot on the wrong side. And embroider the top of the tree using double running stitches and colonial knots (or French knots).
White Embroidery
Now embroider the white scrolls of the tree with double running stitches, back stitches and lazy daisy stitches.
Green Embroidery
With a piece of green embroidery thread, stitch the branches of the tree using back stitches.
Add Details
Add red knots at the end of each white scroll. And stitch the stem of the Christmas tree with a piece of white thread.
Sew Felt Layers Together
Then sew both felt layers together with running stitches. And add a thread as hanger.
Aside from the felt star and tree Christmas ornament, I also made felt gingerbread hearts, a different tree, a bell and a rocking horse felt ornament.
