Today I tried the ‘1910s Milk of Cucumber‘. It’s an Edwardian facial moisturizer and hand cream recipe made with fresh cucumber juice.
Ingredients:
- ca. 1/2 cucumber
- 15g/ 0.5 oz beeswax
- 15g/ 0.5 oz jojoba oil
- 60g/ 2 oz almond oil
Grate the cucumber with peel. Add 1 tsp water and simmer until the cucumber is pulpy – ca. 5 min.
Strain the cucumber through a sieve or muslin. You can add the cucumber pomace to a recipe, such as a pasta sauce or pasta casserole. Melt wax and oil over low heat, stir in the cucumber juice. Stir until cold. The consistency of the milk of cucumber is harder than I thought – the consistency is more like cold cream.

The recipe is fast and easy to make, and because the cucumber juice is boiled I think the cream will keep for some time. The cream is easy to distribute, quickly absorbed into the skin and seems to be nourishing.
