Dye leather black naturally with just vinegar and iron!
Materials:
- natural tanned leather
- iron liquor
To dye leather black naturally, you need vegetable-tanned leather. It doesn’t work with other types of leather – like chrome-tanned leather.
Let the piece of leather soak in the iron liquor for about 24 hours. Then remove it from the iron liquor. And the vegetable-tanned leather turned pitch-black!
Is there need to soak leather in bakingsoda water after iton liqour? Is it enough if I only wash leather with water? Will it crack? And do I need to oil the leathers?
There’s no need to soak the leather in baking soda, I just washed it with water and it didn’t crack. I didn’t oil the leather but I think it’s probably better to oil the leather with linseed oil or another oil. I used the leather for an Edwardian dog collar.
