These sparkling blue sugar cookies are naturally colored with homemade natural blue food coloring!
Ingredients:
- gingerbread, shortbread or sugar cookies
- all-natural blue sugar colored with red cabbage food coloring
- powdered sugar
- hot water
Make powdered sugar icing: Stir together some tablespoons powdered sugar and some teaspoons hot water. Ice the cookies.
Then dip the cookies into the natural blue sugar sprinkles.
The blue sprinkled cookies were day 5 of my Advent calendar.
Oh Wow! It’s amazing that the blue food colour is from red cabbage. It’s so good to know a colouring is natural and they look so pretty too!
Thanks, Corina! 😀
I’m really interested to read this – I’m planning a blog post about natural food colourings soon so I’ll be trying out your cabbage colouring!
Thanks, Mandy! 🙂 I’m glad it’s helpful!
These are gorgeous and what a fun method! My grandchildren would love to make these with me!
Thanks for sharing this at Fiesta Friday!

It always amazes me that you get blue coloring from red cabbage! Thanks for sharing with SYC. I’m sure it’s not intentional, but I’m not seeing a link back to the party.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks Jann! There’s a link back to the party on my link party page!
Lina, I must get some red cabbage and try this. I haven’t made any colored icings in years because I just can’t stand the idea of artificial food coloring.
Thanks for stopping by, Jean! Let me how it goes! 🙂
Lina, That makes such a lovely color. The cookies look wonderful. I will check back for more info. Sylvia D.
Thanks, Sylvia! 🙂
These are so pretty and also happen to be my daughter’s favorite color. I’ll share them with her I know she will want to make them.
Thanks, Mary! 🙂 Let me know how she likes them when she makes them.

I love coloring things with cabbage, but I always do savory things. Sweets are a great idea!
Thanks, Robin!
These are so adorable! I am sure they taste lovely, too! Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday party!
Thanks, Jhuls! 🙂 Yes, they’re delicious! And they don’t taste of cabbage! 😉
These look really pretty! It’s quite unusual to see this shade of blue, they really turned out well and are perfect for this time of year. #KCACOLS
