How To Make Drawn Thread Work

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make basic drawn thread work by hand. Drawn thread work is a counted thread embroidery: Warp or weft threads are removed and the remaining threads are grouped together with hemstitches.

Grease paint was usually sold in sticks covered in paper, sometimes protected by a cardboard tube. Grease paint sticks looked like wax crayons (here’s a picture of 1930s stick grease paints). In the 1920s, black (artificial) silk dresses were suitable for afternoon wear. But they were also worn as work dresses for the office like on this antique 1920s photograph. For my 1920s black dress I used black cellulose acetate fabric which was called celanese in the 1920s. And for the lace collar, I used antique Mechlin lace and cotton bobbinet tulle.
