This naturally colored polka dot cake is made from scratch with only natural flavorings and homemade natural food colorings. You don’t even need a cake pop pan to make a polka dot cake – I’ll show you how to make polka dots without a cake pop maker with leftover stale cake!
The surprise polka dots inside the cake are naturally colored in all colors of the rainbow with blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, butterfly pea flower tea, kale and sunflower seeds!
Some of the polka dots are cake pops made with cake crumbs and butter and some are marzipan balls. Both polka dots are delicious but the marzipan balls are even more luscious and decadent! This naturally colored polka dot with German buttercream frosting cake takes some time to make but the end result is totally worth it!

Naturally Colored Polka Dots Without A Polka Dot Maker
Knead together the ingredients for each polka dot color. Then roll the naturally colored polka dots into balls between your hands.
Vanilla Sponge Cake
Preheat the oven to 160°C/ 325°F. Line a springform pan with baking paper.
Separate the eggs and beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until stiff.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla sugar until thick and creamy. Fold in the egg whites and the flour.
Pour one third of the sponge cake batter into the springform pan and add one third of the naturally colored cake pops.
Bake the naturally colored polka dot cake layer for 20 minutes. Then make the other two sponge cake layers.
German Buttercream
Whisk together cornstarch and 1/2 cup soy milk. Bring the remaining soy milk, sugar and vanilla sugar to a simmer. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the boiling milk while constantly stirring. Continue to cook the pudding until it thickens (about a minute or so). Remove the pudding from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
Now beat the butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add the pudding, one tablespoon at a time. Mix until it’s well incorporated but don’t overmix the German buttercream.
Spread the buttercream onto each sponge cake layer and stack the layers on top of each other. Then cover the naturally colored polka dot cake with buttercream. Put the naturally colored polka dot cake into fridge to set and cool.

Thanks, Debbie! 😀
Oh, what fun this cake is. I am always put off making some of the wacky more colourful bakes because of the use of large amounts of colourings. No problem with that here. Thank you for linking to #CookBlogsahre

Thanks, Judith!
Those polka dots are great in the cake! I am thinking they would also be good even on their own, for cake-pops or on top of other desserts. And the colours are so nice, they look edible, not out of a crayon box. Lovely post!
