Traditional Italian Vegan Pizza – History Of The Naturally Cheeseless Pizza
‘As to his food, this is more easy to describe; for, although the lazzarone belongs to the species omnivora, he, generally, eats but two things: the pizza and the cocomero or watermelon. […] the cocomero in summer, the pizza in winter. The pizza is a sort of a bun; it is round, and made of the same dough as bread. It is of different sizes according to the price.’ (Sketches Of Naples, 1845) -> picture of a pizzaiolo (pizza baker) from 1830
The precursors of pizza – flatbreads, like piadina, pinsa, foccaccia and schiacciata, with sweet or savory toppings – were often vegan, unless the flatbread was made with lard instead of vegetable oil. One of the two “true” Italian (Neapolitan) pizzas – marinara and margherita – is naturally cheeseless (and vegan) too! Pizza margherita is topped with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella but pizza marinara –Â the older of the two dating back to the 18th century – is just topped with tomatoes, basil or oregano, and garlic – no cheese! So if you want a naturally cheeseless Italian pizza, you can order pizza marinara or make the following homemade pizza from scratch in 30 minutes which is inspired by pizza marinara!

That looks so amazing Lina. My daughter is vegan while the rest of us still enjoy our meat so this pizza is the best of both worlds. Can’t wait to try it
Thanks, Michelle, and thanks for featuring me! 🙂
What size pan do you use? Looks so good!
For the photos I used a 12-inch pan but the dough in the recipe is enough for a baking sheet. 🙂
