These moss-covered chocolate-peanut butter-cake pops are so delicious and a great way to use up leftover cake!
Moss-covered desserts are a popular food trend at the moment: moss-covered cupcakes, moss-covered ice cream, moss-covered cake, moss-covered cake pops, moss-covered mousse and moss-covered cookies are everywhere on pinterest right now.
Edible moss is easy to make: Usually cake crumbs or graham crackers are colored with artificial green food coloring. But here I show you how to make edible moss with homemade natural green food coloring!
I’ve made naturally colored edible moss before with matcha and spinach. But for these edible moss bites I used edible moss that is naturally colored with sunflower seeds.

Ingredients For 8 Large Edible Moss Balls – ‘Moss’ Covered Cake Pops
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake Pops
- 1 cup cake crumbs – I used leftover vanilla sponge cake
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp melted chocolate
- 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
Naturally Green Icing – Colored With Kale
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 – 1 1/2 tsp kale puree (1 curly kale leaf)
Edible Moss – Naturally Colored With Sunflower Seeds
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake Pops
Knead together all ingredients and roll them into balls.
Naturally Green Icing – Colored With Kale
Kale Puree: Remove the stalks, use just the leafy parts of the kale. Boil the kale with some water for 5 minutes, drain and refresh with cold water. Using a stick blender, puree kale until smooth.
Naturally Green Icing: Stir together powdered sugar and kale puree.
Naturally Colored Edible Moss
Dark Green Moss: Crumble the naturally green sunflower seed cake between your fingers.
Green Moss: Knead together 1 part dark green sunflower seed cake crumbs and 2 parts light green pea cake crumbs until the moss is evenly colored.
Edible Moss Balls – Moss-Covered Cake Pops
Dip each chocolate-peanut butter-cake pop into the naturally green icing, then roll in the edible moss.
Let the moss-covered cake pops dry overnight. Store them in a cool place.
These look so authentic! I’d have never thought to use kale as a natural colouring. Have pinned for future reference. #bloggerclubuk
