1920s Orangeade Recipe – Historical Food Fortnightly

1920s Orangeade Recipe

I made delicious homemade orangeade for the Historical Food Fortnightly challenge 6: Juicy Fruits. It’s a recipe from 1922. It’s one of the best soft drinks I’ve ever made! 😀

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups fresh orange juice
  • 1 quart water
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

‘Boil sugar and water 5 minutes, adding orange rinds. Strain, chill, add fruit juices and dilute to taste with ice water.’

The orangeade has a wonderful taste of orange, and it’s easy and fast to make (apart from the cooling time of the syrup). I thought about reducing the sugar, but the orangeade isn’t too sweet because of the fresh orange and lemon juice. The orangeade is perfect for a hot summer day! 😀

  2. I love vintage recipes! Your Orangeade looks really refreshing and delicious. Although it does have a lot of sugar, you dilute the concentrate in water so I think it is much healthier than so many store bought drinks too. Sharing later today on the Hearth and Soul Facebook page. Thank you so much for bringing this recipe to the party! Hope to see you when the party is back from summer holidays on August 7th 🙂
