1850s Starched Cotton And Lace Collar

This is my mid-Victorian handsewn cotton and lace collar. I used thin, white cotton fabric and white cotton bobbin lace.

Wrong side of the Victorian collar: hand-rolled hems

I finished the raw edges of the collar with hand rolled hems. Then I attached the lace with overcasting stitches. After that I starched and ironed the collar. Now the collar is as stiff as paper.

Here I’m wearing the collar with my 1840s walking dress.

    1. In the Victorian era, collars were usually basted to the neck (with long running stitches) and removed to wash and starch the collar again. And instead of basting stitches, you can also temporarily attach the collar with safety pins or a brooch. 🙂
