Turtleneck To Scoop Neck – Sweater Refashion

Turtleneck To Scoop Neck Sweater Refashion How To Tutorial

I hate turtleneck collars as much as I hate hoods! 😉 So I usually remove or refashion turtleneck collars: Some time ago, I turned a turtleneck into a wide crochet lace collar. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to change a turtleneck collar into a mock collar or scoop neck.

You’ll need:

  • turtleneck sweater
  • crochet hook
  • sewing machine or needle and thread
  • scissors

Sweater Refashion – Option 1: Mock Collar

To shortened the turtleneck into a mock neck, unravel half of the turtleneck collar. Using the unravelled yarn, crochet around the collar with single crochet or slip stitches picking up the stitches of the collar.

Sweater Refashion – Option 2: Scoop Neck

I didn’t like the mock neck anymore, so I turned it into a scoop neck.

Cut out a scoop neck. Unravel the yarn of the turtleneck.

Measure the circumference of the scoop neck. Using single crochet stitches, crochet a facing as long as the circumference of the scoop neck. When you’ve crocheted 3 or 4 rows, fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.

Pin the crochet facing to the neckline and sew two rows of zig-zag stitches around the neck (the turquoise lines). The raw edge of the sweater is now hidden behind the crochet facing and the zig-zag stitches prevent fraying.

Trim loose threads.

The neckline might be a bit wonky after sewing: Press it with a damp cloth, and the neckline is smooth again.

  2. Thank you. I too hate turtle necks and hoodies. Gives me confidence in what to do. I would love to know what your do with a hoodie as some of them I really like only for the hood. ?
