Noyaux, marzipan, amaretto, kirschwasser, cherry jam – there are a lot of recipes that are made with apricot kernels, peach kernels or cherry pits!
Just recently I found out that apricot kernels, cherry pits, peach kernels and peach leaves can be used as natural bitter almond flavoring. ‘Families should always save their peach-kernels, as they can be used in cakes, puddings and custards.’ (Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes and Sweetmeats, 1836, p. 56) And even if the kernels contain amygdalin, which turns into cyanide in the body, it’s safe to consume food prepared with kernels if it’s cooked or baked before eating (more about it here).
These homemade candied cherries are quick and easy to make – and they taste much better than the store-bought kind! The candied cherries are made with fresh cherries, not canned cherries or maraschino cherries.
And they turned out delicious and I never would’ve thought that candied cherries can be made so quickly and easily at home! All you need for these homemade cherries is pitted cherries, sugar and water. This homemade cherry pie is so delicious – with a flaky, buttery pie crust from scratch, homemade cherry filling and marzipan crumble on top!
Cherries are not my favorite fruit but this cherry marzipan pie is so yummy! I baked the pie in a large 12-inch (30cm) pie plate that I found while clearing out grandma’s house (more of grandma’s antique treasures on my instagram account).
