Ingredients:

  • 2 vanilla beans
  • 1 cup rum

Directions:

Split the vanilla bean in half and scrape out the seeds. The seeds aren’t necessary for vanilla extract – use them for vanilla ice cream or vanilla pudding.

Now cut the vanilla bean into small pieces and put them into a jar.

Pour rum over the vanilla bean pieces. Cover the jar with a lid and store the vanilla extract in a cool and dark place for at least one month, shaking it occasionally.

You can reuse the ‘spent’ vanilla bean pieces for your next homemade vanilla extract.

  1. I have made vanilla extract for years and we love using it…. I have never used rum though… have always used vodka, but have heard good things about making it with rum. Thank you

  2. That’s good to know Lina, I’d love to try make our own vanilla extract, but I’m not 100% sure where to get the pods. I haven’t seen any at the organic market we go to. I’ll have to shop around a bit more

  3. Thanks for sharing at What’d You Do This Weekend? I would love to try this. Rum vanilla. That would be good in chocolate chip cookies.

    Wishes for tasty dishes,

  4. I have made homemade vanilla for years and have tried every imaginable alcohol, rum, vodka, etc. I have found that my favorite is a really good cognac. I also place the whole vanilla bean or two or three sliced open in the bottle, it looks really pretty especially for gift giving. It does in fact give a more vanilla flavor and you can also take them out to use the seeds in other things but with so much more flavor. Recently I had a luncheon and gave each guest a parting gift of my homemade vanilla. They loved it.
