Homemade vanilla extract is very easy to make and smells wonderful! This vanilla extract is sugar-free and made with just two ingredients: vanilla beans and rum. You can use vanilla extract for cake, smoothies and ice cream.
- 1 vanilla bean
- 5 oz/ 150 ml rum
Split the vanilla bean in half and scrape out the seeds. The seeds aren’t necessary for vanilla extract – you can use them for homemade dairy-free vanilla ice cream. Now cut the vanilla bean into small pieces and put them into a jar.
Pour rum over the vanilla bean pieces. Cover the jar with a lid and store the vanilla extract in a cool and dark place for at least one month, shaking it occasionally.
You can reuse the ‘spent’ vanilla bean pieces for your next homemade vanilla extract.
