Today I tried the ‘1910s Milk of Cucumber’. It’s an Edwardian recipe for a facial moisturizer or hand cream with fresh cucumber juice.
- ca. 1/2 cucumber
- 15g/ 0.5 oz beeswax
- 15g/ 0.5 oz jojoba oil
- 60g/ 2 oz almond oil
Grate the cucumber with peel. Add 1 tsp water and simmer until the cucumber is pulpy (ca. 5 min.).
Strain the cucumber through a sieve or muslin.
The cucumber pomace I gave my dog as dog treat. She loves fresh cucumber, melon etc. – and she also seems to love boiled cucumber pomace! 😉
Melt wax and oil over low heat, stir in the cucumber juice. Stir until cold.
The consistency of the milk of cucumber is harder than I thought – the consistency is like that of Edwardian cold creams I tried. The recipe is fast and easy to make, and because the cucumber juice is boiled I think the cream will keep for some time. The cream is easy to distribute, quickly absorbed and seems to be nourishing for the skin.
