Some years ago I sewed this 1950s-style dress with taffeta fabric which is embroidered with white roses. It’s my first 1950s-style dress and I’m really pleased with how the dress turned out. It’s elegant and comfortable!
The bodice is shaped with two darts at the front. And I finished the neckline and armscyes with white cotton facings. I attached the facings by hand so that the stitches are invisible on the right side.
The skirt part of the dress is just a rectangle with two box pleats at the front and two box pleats at the back. I stiffened the hem with a wide cotton canvas facing, so that it isn’t necessary to wear a 1950s petticoat. But because the fabric is slightly sheer, I wear one of my 1920s slips underneath.
Usually, 1950s dresses had still no zipper closure. The dresses that my grandmother, a dressmaker, made in the 1950s and early 1960s had a hook & eye, snap or button closure. My dress is closed with snaps on the left side (there’s also one hook and bar at the waist). Here’s a close-up of the closure. That is a gorgeous dress! I’d like to have it in navy with long or 3/4 sleeves and higher in the back. If that’s what you wear to walk the dog, I can only imagine what you’d wear to a dressy party–probably something with a train! 🙂
